On-device AI for nutrition. How it works and its limits
On-device AI moves part of the computation from the cloud to your device. We explain what that really changes, what cannot be done locally, and what to look for when choosing an app.
What is on-device AI?
BASICS
On-device AI computes on the device. In practice this means the task content is not sent to a cloud provider as part of that analysis, and the result can be produced without an internet connection.
Which tasks can run on the device?
The scope depends on the app and the system's capabilities. Usually these are text tasks:
- Meal description analysis
- Portion and nutrition estimates
- Food-name cleanup and correction
Hardware and system requirements
REQUIREMENTS
On-device AI does not run on every device. It needs compatible hardware, a suitable OS version and an available model. This is the most common source of disappointment when a vendor's claims are not read carefully.
How Fitaily uses on-device AI
FITAILY
Fitaily uses Apple's system model and runs selected text tasks locally: meal description analysis, activity estimate and recipe from text. Photo analysis uses the cloud, and there is no automatic switching between modes.
How to verify vendor claims
- Check which specific tasks run locally
- Check device and OS requirements
- Check whether photo analysis is local or cloud
- Check whether there is an automatic cloud fallback
Frequently asked questions
Does on-device nutrition AI work without internet?
Locally supported tasks do, when the device and model are available.
Can photo analysis be local?
In current apps photo analysis usually uses the cloud. In Fitaily that is the case.
Is on-device AI always free?
Not always. In Fitaily supported local tasks do not require Premium, but depend on device compatibility.
